Road to Your Driving Licence

You need a valid provisional driving licence before you can drive on public roads, including during a professional lesson.

Check the eligibility and identity requirements, then apply for your first provisional driving licence on GOV.UK . You can plan your lessons while you wait, but your licence must have been issued before you get behind the wheel.

First step: Your provisional licence allows you to learn under the required supervision; it is not a full driving licence.

Once your provisional licence has arrived, lessons with a qualified instructor will help you build safe habits in a structured way. Your first lessons will establish your starting point and a clear plan for your progress.

As your control and awareness improve, your lessons will cover:

• Moving off, stopping and controlling the car smoothly
• Using mirrors and making effective observations
• Junctions, roundabouts and different road types
• Road signs, markings and safe positioning
• Parking and reversing exercises
• Planning ahead and responding to other road users

You can begin preparing for the theory test as soon as you start learning. Combining study with practical lessons makes it easier to connect the Highway Code with situations you meet on the road.

The theory test has two parts:

1. Multiple-choice questions about road rules, signs and safe driving
2. Hazard perception clips that test how quickly you identify developing hazards

Use current learning materials and practise both parts rather than relying on memorised answers alone.

You must pass both parts of the theory test. Your result includes a pass certificate number, which you will need when booking your practical test.

The pass is valid for two years. If you do not pass your practical test within that period, you will need to take the theory test again.

Keep learning: Continue using your theory knowledge during lessons so that safe decisions become part of your everyday driving.

There is no set minimum number of lessons. You are ready when you can drive safely, consistently and independently across a range of roads and conditions, without relying on prompts from your instructor.

Your preparation is likely to include:

• Independent driving and route planning
• Parking and reversing exercises
• Busier junctions, roundabouts and changing traffic conditions
• Higher-speed roads, including dual carriageways where appropriate
• Anticipating risk and making safe decisions
• Mock tests and focused work on any remaining weaknesses

The aim is broader than passing a test: it is to develop the judgement and habits you will need when driving on your own.

Book your practical test when you can meet the required standard consistently, not simply because a date is available. Your instructor can help you judge your readiness honestly.

If you plan to use your instructor’s car, agree the test centre, date and time with them before confirming the booking.

The car driving test usually lasts around 40 minutes. It includes an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions, general driving, one reversing exercise and a period of independent driving. You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

The examiner is looking for safe, controlled and independent driving. You can pass with no serious or dangerous faults and no more than 15 driving faults.

If you do not pass, use the result as a practical plan for your next lessons. A failed attempt does not undo the progress you have already made.

You can drive as soon as you pass, provided your insurance covers you as a full licence holder and the vehicle is taxed, insured and roadworthy. Your examiner will normally explain how your full licence will be issued.

Passing is the beginning of driving independently. Start with familiar journeys, leave extra time and keep using the observation and planning routines you developed during lessons.
