Driving instructor training with RightRay

Train to become a qualified driving instructor

If you are ready to start a new career as a driving instructor, RightRay Driving School can help you understand the training route, prepare for each stage of the ADI qualification process, and move towards becoming a confident, professional instructor.

Your route to becoming an ADI

To charge for driving lessons in Great Britain, you need to become an Approved Driving Instructor, often known as an ADI. The qualification process is made up of three main tests covering theory, driving ability and instructional ability.

The three stages of ADI training

Our training is designed to help you build the knowledge, driving standard and teaching skills needed at each stage.

ADI Part 1
Theory and hazard perception
This stage focuses on your knowledge of road rules, driving theory, instructional knowledge and hazard perception. It gives you the foundation needed before moving into the practical stages.
ADI Part 2
Driving ability
This stage tests your own driving standard. Training focuses on safe, accurate and professional driving so you can demonstrate the level expected of a future instructor.
ADI Part 3
Instructional ability
This stage looks at your ability to teach. You will develop coaching skills, lesson planning, risk management and the ability to adapt your instruction to different learners.

What our training support can include

We aim to give trainee instructors clear, practical support rather than leaving them to work everything out alone.

Training and preparation

  • Guidance through the ADI qualification route
  • Support preparing for ADI Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3
  • Practical driving development for Part 2
  • Lesson planning and coaching support for Part 3
  • Advice on building confidence as an instructor

Ongoing instructor support

  • Help understanding the role of a driving instructor
  • Support with pupil communication and lesson structure
  • Guidance as you move from training into real lessons
  • Local knowledge from an established driving school
  • A clear pathway towards future PDI or ADI opportunities

Training towards your PDI licence

After passing ADI Part 2, trainee instructors may be able to apply for a trainee driving instructor licence, commonly known as a PDI licence. This can allow you to gain experience giving on-road instruction before taking ADI Part 3.

To apply for a trainee licence, GOV.UK says you need to have passed ADI Part 2 and completed at least 40 hours of training with a qualified ADI. This stage can be an important bridge between training and becoming fully qualified.
